The Voice of the Brush

Line / Stroke / Word

Caligraphy

Join us in exploring the range of expression of the Chinese Brush, an ancient tool that joins body, mind, and spirit.

Clarity and Simplicity

We begin with the grounding straight line (ichi), a seated experience of Tai Chi Chuan. This practice strengthens and centers. We learn to move from the body’s core so that everything we do is aligned and integrated.

Expressive Acts

Moving into larger strokes with big brushes and buckets of ink, we are held by the principles of heaven, earth and human as we make the big gesture, find the grounding, counterbalance, resolve and complete the motion. Guided in this way we discover a natural artistic expression accessible to all.

A Moment in Time

In the end our handwriting will be the vehicle for the distilled voice of haiku. Through the constraint of this three line form, we focus in, open up and see the world with fresh eyes. Our writing reflects a moment in time. We know where we are.

No previous art experience needed. Only the willingness to take a leap.
