Protector Principle
In the closing days of the Tibetan astrological year, known as Dön Season, it is said that the negative karma accumulated over the previous year ripens. This can potentially manifest as obstacles either internal or external such as; mental confusion, emotional anxiety, depression, financial misfortunes or ill health. Thus, extra care, awareness and protection are needed to address these end-of-the-year negative energies.
During the weekend we will explore the notion of protection, especially from the perspective of the Buddhist and Shambhala teachings.
- What merits protection? Participants will identify what in their own lives is a priority for protection and is most vulnerable to negativity or harm. This could include physical safety, health, relationships, mental clarity, emotional well-being, and spiritual practice.
- What are the best ways to protect them? We will look at strategies from the Buddhist and Shambhala perspective that can be employed to protect what is important to us.
- How can we serve as protectors for others? We will expand our view of protection into a wider circle and consider how we can benefit our family, community, and the world at large through our activity.
Exploring Protection:
Program activities will include:
- Readings & Discussions
- Chanting and Meditation Practices
- Writing or Art Exercises (your choice)
- Leader Presentation (modest amount)
- Light Physical Activity (good for any level of mobility or fitness)
By the end of the Protector Principle weekend we will not only have addressed the concerns of the season, but developed a sense of how protection can be integrated more fully into our life.

Instructor
Dr. Brian McCorkle was first introduced to Buddhism and meditation as a child in the 1960s, when his parents studied with Philip Kapleau Roshi at the Rochester (NY) Zen Center. Needing to rebel as a young adult, he immersed himself in contemplative Christianity and graduated from the Episcopal Divinity School. In 1999 he returned to Buddhism when he joined the Shambhala/Vajradhatu community. He became an authorized meditation instructor, teacher, Shambhala Training Director, senior leader of the unique Shambhala form of protection called the Dorje Kasung, and senior student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. Professionally, he earned a PhD in clinical psychology, and after originally working with serious mental illness became the founding director of the Center for the Study of Religion and Psychology of the Danielsen Institute at Boston University. Since retiring, he took up the serious study of classical piano and now performs a dozen or more times a year in venues such as the BSO Café, a dinner venue before performances of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He studied cooking for a year at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts. He is also totally besotted with his wife, all dogs, and his four delightful grandchildren, although not necessarily in that order.
